AI vs Traditional Rendering: Cost, Speed, and Quality Compared

The question is not whether AI rendering is 'as good as' V-Ray. The question is whether that framing even makes sense. Architecture projects have multiple phases, and each phase has different requirements for speed, cost, and quality. The renderer that is right for a competition board is wrong for a construction document, and vice versa.

Here's an honest comparison across the metrics that actually matter to practicing architects.

Setup time

Traditional (V-Ray, Corona, Enscape): A production-quality V-Ray render requires a detailed 3D model with assigned materials, lighting setup, camera placement, and environment configuration. For a new scene, setup ranges from 2 hours for a simple interior to a full day or more for a complex exterior with landscaping. This is skilled work. A junior architect cannot just press 'render.'

AI (Gaia, Midjourney, etc.): Upload a sketch or screenshot, select a style, click generate. Setup is measured in seconds. The tradeoff is control - you are guiding, not specifying. But for concept-phase work, that tradeoff is almost always worth it.

Render time

Traditional: A single high-resolution V-Ray render on a modern workstation takes 20 minutes to several hours, depending on complexity, resolution, and quality settings. Render farms can parallelize this, but add cost. An animation? Days.

AI: 15 to 30 seconds per image. Four variations in a minute. A full set of concept renders for a client presentation in under 10 minutes. This is not incrementally faster. It is a different category.

Cost per image

Traditional: V-Ray license runs EUR 600-2,400/year. Corona is similar. Add workstation costs (GPU rendering needs serious hardware), electricity, and the architect's time - easily the largest cost. A single polished render, fully loaded, can cost a practice EUR 200-500 in labour alone.

Quality ceiling

This is where traditional rendering still wins, and will continue to win for specific use cases. A skilled V-Ray artist can produce images indistinguishable from photographs. Every material is physically accurate. Every light bounce is calculated. Every reflection is correct. For final documentation renders, construction marketing, and photorealistic visualizations where a building needs to look exactly as it will be built, V-Ray and Corona remain the standard.

AI rendering has improved dramatically, but it still interprets rather than calculates. Materials are plausible, not precise. Reflections are convincing, not physically accurate. For concept presentations and client meetings, this quality level is more than sufficient. For a developer's marketing brochure, you probably still want the traditional render, or at minimum a heavy post-production pass.

Iteration speed

This is where AI rendering changes practice most dramatically. In traditional rendering, 'can we try it in brick instead of timber?' means re-assigning materials, potentially re-modelling details, and re-rendering. That is 30 minutes to 2 hours.

In AI rendering, it's 20 seconds. Want to see it at dusk instead of noon? 20 seconds. With a green roof? 20 seconds. In a Brutalist style? 20 seconds. The ability to show a client ten directions in the time it used to take to show one fundamentally changes the design conversation.

Learning curve

V-Ray takes months to learn well. Material creation, lighting rigs, render settings, post-production: it is a specialist skill. Many practices hire dedicated visualization artists or outsource entirely.

AI rendering takes minutes to learn. Upload, select, generate. The skill shifts from technical execution to creative direction: choosing the right input, the right style, the right composition. Architects are already good at this.

The verdict: use both

This is not an either/or decision. The practices getting the best results use AI rendering for concept and schematic design - where speed and iteration matter more than precision - and traditional rendering for design development and documentation, where accuracy is non-negotiable.

  • Concept phase: AI rendering. Fast, cheap, iterative. Show the client 10 directions, align on one, move forward.
  • Schematic design: AI rendering. Develop the chosen direction with rapid material and lighting studies.
  • Design development: Transition to traditional. Lock geometry, specify real materials, set up accurate lighting.
  • Documentation and marketing: Traditional rendering. Pixel-perfect, physically accurate, contractually defensible.
